TALB Committees and Task Forces
Your Association is strengthened by your involvement. We invite you to join one of these exciting committees/task forces by contacting the President, Mike Day at mday@talb.org.
*AWARDS AND EVENTS: Coordinates major annual TALB events such as Read Across America, Day of the Teacher, Committee Dinner, Retirement and Awards Banquet, and the CDC/Head Start Confabulation. Accepts nominations, screens and recommends recipients for TALB scholarships and TALB’s award for Teacher of the Month (Golden Apple), as well as other awards such as Friends of Education, both regional and state. Publicizes events and opportunities in the monthly Professional Educator.
*ETHNIC MINORITY AFFAIRS AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Makes recommendations regarding ethnic minority input and representation in the Association. The Committee will be composed of two (2) representatives from each of the following recognized ethnic minorities: American Indian/Alaska Native, African American, Hispanic, and Pacific Asian American. The committee members shall be appointed by the President. It coordinates events such as the EMAC Conference, MLK Parade, and Human Rights Award.
HEALTH/SAFETY/ENVIRONMENT TASK FORCE: Deals with health, safety, and environmental concerns. (Meets as needed.)
TALB POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE (PAC), helps recruit, elect and support locally elected officials to the LBUSD School Board and the cities encompassed within the LBUSD boundaries. Committee members are appointed by the TALB President.
TALB ADVOCATES COMMITTEE: The TALB Advocates Committee is comprised of one member from each of the ten Board of Director’s areas elected by the Association Reps and one elected by the CDC/Head Start Rep Council. Their duties include educating members about their rights, conducting the school climate and administrator surveys, and contributing an article to the quarterly newsletter. The committee meets monthly to review membership concerns that have been communicated by the members or the Association Reps.
BARGAINING TEAM: The composition of the Team shall be as follows: a Board Member, two elementary school teachers, one middle school teacher, one high school teacher, one teacher representing special interest groups, one Child Development Center (CDC) teacher, and one Head Start teacher. All must be TALB/CTA/NEA members. The Team and its chairperson are appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Board of Directors.
BARGAINING ADVISORY TEAM: This committee provides support for the Bargaining Team by polling members for input, researching issues, and suggesting contract language. Members of the Bargaining Team are selected from this committee. Members are nominated by the President and approved by the Board. If you are interested on serving on this committee, contact your TALB Board of Director.
ELECTIONS: Oversees all and runs all TALB elections. Committee members are appointed by the President and approved by the Board. (Meets as needed.)
FINANCE: The TALB Treasurer serves as Chair of the Finance Committee. There are also two K-12 members elected by the Rep Council, one elected from CDC/Head Start, and one alternate. The Finance Committee is responsible for overseeing TALB finances and meets monthly to review the current budget, prepare a budget proposal for the following fiscal year, and makes recommendations for TALB’s future fiscal strategy.
LIBRARY/MEDIA TEACHERS TASK FORCE: Deals with concerns of librarian/ media teachers in the district. (Meets as needed.)
*SPECIAL EDUCATION TASK FORCE: Deals with concerns of special education teachers and regular education teachers in their assignments with special education students.
PEER ASSISTANCE AND REVIEW (PAR) COMMITTEE: The PAR program is designed to strengthen the participating teacher’s skills and expertise in collaboration with the Consulting Teacher and, when applicable, a supervising administrator for a referred teacher. Peer Assistance is required for all referred teachers and is available on a voluntary basis to all other teachers in the District. Committee members are appointed by the President.
TALB-R COMMITTEE: The TALB Retired Committee meets the first Monday of the month at the TALB office to share information on retiree concerns.
TALB GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE: The Grievance Committee is comprised of seven members and will assist site representatives or members to identify sections of the contract that have been violated, handle grievances in a timely manner, act as an advocate for members, and determine if a grievance should proceed to Step 4, binding arbitration.
