This Is Common Core California Showcase

The Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation (CDEF), along with its partners, is pleased to introduce a new opportunity to spotlight Common Core State Standards (CCSS) implementation happening across the state—from correspondence and outreach to parents and the community, to new ideas for aligning the curriculum and making learning fun. The This Is Common Core California Showcase is a collection of photos, descriptions, videos, student work, and other testimonials that demonstrate what Common Core looks like for California’s students. To submit an artifact to the This Is Common Core California Showcase, see samples, and learn more about criteria and requirements, please see the attached letter from CDEF or visit the CDEF This Is Common Core California Web page.

Digital Library Forums

The Smarter Balanced Digital Library is an online library of over 2,600 resources, which is available to all California K–12 public educators to help tailor CCSS instruction to students’ needs using the formative assessment process. Educators who are not yet registered should contact their local educational agency California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) coordinator or designee.

Beginning March 16, 2015, Smarter Balance began hosting a Digital Library Spotlight Forum Series for all Digital Library users. The forums feature English language arts/literacy and mathematics modules in the Digital Library and will be facilitated by the developers of the modules who are well-known experts in content areas as well as experts in working with English language learners. During each forum, these experts will be available to discuss questions about their respective modules. A Digital Library login is required to participatePlease see the attached flyer for more details.

A new video, Introducing the Smarter Balanced Digital Library, is now available on the CDE CAASPP Digital Library Web page. This short video provides a general introduction to the Digital Library and includes endorsements from California educators who contributed to or are using the formative assessment resources in the library.

New Resources

CAASPP Communications Toolkit

The CAASPP Communications Toolkit is a new Web page with links to key resources, including documents that can be used to inform schools, families, and community representatives about the Smarter Balanced summative assessments.

Teaching to the Core

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust funded the development of this collection of classroom videos and associated lesson materials to help K–12 educators implement the instructional shifts required by the CCSS. Each videotaped lesson includes descriptive annotations that identify lesson elements and teacher and student actions and behaviors that support Common Core learning. These Teaching the Core lessons have been reviewed and annotated by educators and content experts using Student Achievement Partners’ Instructional Practice Guide, a tool that helps educators plan and review their Common Core-aligned lessons to make the necessary shifts in instruction.
